Basic Data

One of the children raised as possible heir to the L name. She was 13th in the Wammy's House rankings and wasn't actively involved in the Kira case.

Since leaving Wammy's House, Chrissie has set up a law firm, specialising in representing at risk children.

She lives with her partner, Salvo, their infant son and Century at an undisclosed location.

Lilac was born in a suburb of Montréal, Canada, as the only child of Thierry and Odette DeGaneau. Her homelife was unremarkable, but loving until 1996, when her mother died of breast cancer.

Thierry had always been hard-working, but now buried himself in work to escape his mourning. Lilac was left alone with a succession of nannies, none of whom were a match for her intelligence. Bored, despite their attempts to stimulate her, Lilac gained a reputation with the childcare agencies as 'naughty' 'disruptive' 'unco-operative' and 'wild'.

Thierry had been drinking heavily whilst at home, but as time went on, he started drinking at work. He lost his job in June 1998, when Lilac was eight years old. His alcoholism escalated, whilst he was out of work. Lilac was already being monitored by the Child Protection Service, though concerns about her welfare. Workers reported that she remained healthy, clean and nourished. It was suggested that she had behavourial problems, though not enough to warrant her being separated from her father.

On September 13th, 1999, Thierry fell into Saint Lawrence River, whilst drunk. Nine year old Lilac witnessed it and screamed for help, but her father drowned. She entered a Wammy's Orphanage, but was so traumatised by events that it was a while before her genius became apparent.

Lilac entered Wammy's House, in England, on February 22nd 2002. Prohibited from speaking her native Montréalaise, she felt isolated from the other children. Her earliest weeks were spent learning English as quickly as possible, whilst seething in enforced silence. She struggles with linguistics, detesting the need to learn them, then needing to use a language frequently in order to remain fluent. Though present before the May 2002 pseudonym watershed, Chrissie only really became fluent and therefore more interactive after it.

Why Chrissie?

Chrissie was at Wammy's House during May 2002, when pseudonyms were being chosen. Nathalie expressed the opinion that, if she was to be known by a new name, she wanted one that was 'ordinary'. Some of those hearing her agreed and so chose names accordingly.

Chrissie had heard Hollow playing Siouxsie and the Banshees 'Christine' and had empathised with the 'strawberry girl' lyric (Chrissie's mother had told her that she had 'strawberry blond' hair). Chrissie discovered that the song was about Christine Costner Sizemore, a woman with multiple personalities. Slightly misunderstanding that as meaning 'mistress of disguise', she took the name. Though officially Christine, her name quickly became Chrissie amongst the other children.

Sharply protective, particularly of those whom she perceives to be the underdogs, Chrissie has a propensity to leap in where angels fear to tread. Depending on the day and situation, Chrissie has defended most of her peers at one time or another and, as a result, is one of the more respected members of the alumni.

Chrissie is extremely good at evaluating people and knowing when to apply intelligence or emotion to gain what she wants. These days, Salvo and Century (geniuses in their own right) bow to Chrissie's ability to negotiate through any perceived interference from the Watari Network. Chrissie is the only Wammy's House alumni about whom Hal Lidner has confessed to feeling intimidated by.

Chrissie is the best lawyer produced by Wammy's House.

"I'm pregnant not infirm."
Chrissie, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 18 – De Profundis

"It's like surrounding a volcano with water. You want to rage and fight, but you're trying really hard to keep your temper, so you can access Near's nice police databases and satellite photography. You want everyone to shut the fuck up, so you can concentrate."
Chrissie, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 19 – Dominoes

"In effect, you have ten Lawliets putting their all into resolving this." Chrissie smiled, calmly. "You are fighting for Matt. I'm fighting for my unborn child. Salvo is fighting for both of us. It all works out the same. It's not about rankings or titles anymore. This is personal. That's much more focusing, don't you think?"
Chrissie, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 19 – Dominoes

"I have no idea where you and Matt live, but I'm guessing that with enough time and resources, I could work it out. I'd just run a programme to search every games shop and supermarket in the country, looking for excessive games and chocolate orders being delivered."
Chrissie, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 19 – Dominoes

"Personally, I'm inclined to believe a theory which both you and Near have independently come up with. I was just the mere thirteenth." She smirked. "I remember when that used to matter as well. But now I have my home, my husband, my baby and I'm thoroughly enjoying myself as a lawyer. I take on the child abuse cases and I wouldn't give it up for the world. I'm content fighting my little bit of the world; but I can understand those who still cling to the old battles. I understand you." Mello snorted. "Mello, I do. It's just a matter of scale. I fought tooth and nail to overtake Century and Salvo once, got as far as tenth, but it nearly killed me. I cried for days after I slipped back down again. I can't imagine what it must have been like taking on Near."
Chrissie, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 19 – Dominoes

"Yes, I know. I went from dreaming of a white-faced, green-eyed, short redhead to marrying a black, brown-eyed, huge hunk of a man, but allow a woman to be perverse."
Chrissie, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 19 – Dominoes

"I'm on keeping you and Near from killing each other duty. Ask one of the others."
Chrissie, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 19 – Dominoes

"Oh for God's sake!" Chrissie yelled. "Will you all just be quiet, please? I'm trying to concentrate with what feels like a cannonball squashing all of my internal organs!" She slapped Salvo's comforting hand away. "Shit, I need the toilet again. How am I supposed to keep my train of thought? Arggggh!" She struggled to her feet and stormed out.
Chrissie, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 20 – Brainstorm

"I'm sending Century out of this room. He is not going to be here when guns are being pointed at people. Even Mello."
Chrissie, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 20 – Brainstorm

"Just a lie down and I promise to call you if anything important happens at all. If you can't sleep, then say your rosary. Get some divine intervention on the case."
Chrissie, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 21 – Garden

"I have missed him. In a weird, perverse, probably utterly masochistic way, I think I might have missed Mello."
Chrissie, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 24 – Secrets and Regrets

"Hello, it's Chrissie again. Item 7 of the Resolution states quite clearly that all wards of Watari must be raised in a way that is satisfactory to Watari, the Board and the child, regardless of their current location. As Century is a ward of Watari, his activities and education are still subject to the items in the rest of the Resolution, though overseen by myself and Salvo, on behalf of Watari. I can confirm that his welfare is paramount and that his education continues unhindered."

Chrissie narrowed her eyes. "Fenian, póg mo thóin, and before you ask, those are my only words in Irish Gaelic." She rubbed Deontic's back. "And, as this situation has clearly demonstrated, they are pretty much the only words I need."
Chrissie (póg mo thóin = kiss my arse), The Mello Code: Chapter 44 – TYVM for 4000 Hits

"This quagmire might not be worth living for, but it certainly isn't worth dying for.
Chrissie, The Mello Code: Chapter 44 – TYVM for 4000 Hits

"I think your mother would have been proud, Mihael." (Mello) stopped and looked back. (Chrissie) hadn't turned. She was still looking at a bit of carpet a few feet in front of Near. "To be honest, I think all of our mothers would have been proud. We survived Wammy's House. We survived Kira. Mihael, Nate, Mail, you caught Kira. Well done and thank you."
