Basic Data

One of the children raised as possible heir to the L name. She was 4th in the Wammy's House rankings and wasn't actively involved in the Kira case.

Since leaving Wammy's House, Deontic has worked on cases arising from the Watari Network. She has beaten L's record for sheer quantity of cases solved, though none of them are as high profile as some of his.

In recent weeks, Deontic has also increasingly been helping Hal directly, in her duties as Watari.

Backstory

Lim Pek Wan was born, on October 15th 1990, as the daughter of Lim Zhousui and Foo Ai Lin, in Trenggau, Malay Peninsula, Malaysia. The family travelled around the country, as her father was a building consultant.

In 1992, the family were stranded by monsoon floodwaters and sought shelter in an isolated village. Flood damage reduced the water supply, with Pek Wan's parents safing their ration of clean water for their infant daughter. As a result, Lim Zhousui and Foo Ai Lin both contracted chlorea before the crisis was over. Ai Lin died on October 29th 1992, with Zhousui dying two days later, on October 31st.

Pek Wan survived and was transported to Singapore, where she was raised by her maternal grandmother, Tan Li Leen. Li Leen died, on July 30th 2000, of heart disease. Pek Wan was taken to a Wammy's Group orphanage. She was taken to Wammy's House, in England, on September 18th 2002.

Why Deontic?

When the directive arrived at Wammy's House, asking the children to pick pseudonyms, Pek Wan considered that it was another test. She tried to deduce what kind of names L would be looking for. Her conclusion was a name that showed academic prowess and a logical mind.

'Deontic logic is the field of logic that is concerned with obligation, permission, and related concepts. Alternatively, a deontic logic is a formal system that attempts to capture the essential logical features of these concepts. Typically, a deontic logic uses OA to mean it is obligatory that A, (or it ought to be (the case) that A), and PA to mean it is permitted (or permissible) that A. The term deontic is derived from the ancient Greek déon, meaning, roughly, that which is binding or proper.' Wikipedia

Deontic logic was (and remains) Deontic's favourite medium of deduction. She applies it in most cases that she solves.

Personality

Deontic is happiest when able to quantify the world around her in logical categories according to pattern. She is naturally reserved and ill at ease in the limelight. She becomes very self-conscious if placed in a position of leadership, despite the fact that her strategy is usually excellent. She is also uncomfortable in light-hearted situations and finds it difficult to relax unless her mind is working on some puzzle.

Though logical, she does possess the full range of emotions and Mello once referred to her as the best bridge of communication between himself and Near. Even amongst her genius peers, Deontic's intelligence is respected. Many people have pondered over the years how Matt managed to consistently beat her in the Wammy's House rankings.

Deontic's obsession with origami stems from the fact that she needs to be doing something, whilst sitting still, or else she would be bored.

Abilities

Deontic has many strengths and she is an excellent detective. Her main forte is predicting, or reconstructing, human behaviour based on psychological, social, behavourial, cultural and physical profiling patterns.

Quotations

~ Collated by MRS-Jeevas

"You are here and you are calmer. There's only one explanation for that and that is that you achieved your goal. You were always so single-minded about it. We owe you a debt."
Deontic, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 5 – Alumni

"It's taking an average of 1.3 seconds for each of you to take in the information from that paper and none of you have reacted in any way, despite the fact that it did predict your positions perfectly."
Deontic, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 6 – The Fourth Generation

"I've studied geniuses and of course we have similarities, but it's not enough. There are specific idiosyncracies that are only apparent in Wammy geniuses. At least at the consistency that we exhibit them."
Deontic, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 6 – The Fourth Generation

"I need to have a visual. My mind works better in 3D."
Deontic, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 6 – The Fourth Generation

"N, you had better have some good evidence to back up your theory." Deontic responded. "From where I'm standing, I just see a psychopathic bastard, who made all of our lives Hell on Earth when we were kids; scared the life out of us all yesterday, pulling guns out at the gallery and at Nathalie's; threatening Nathalie with the Mafia; then all of this! Are you telling me he's never pulled a gun on you, N? Because it's really scary when he does."
Deontic, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 11 – The Race is On

"Two of my friends are dead and you are calling it uninteresting? Fuck you, Nate!"
Deontic, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 11 – The Race is On

"Hal, you might not want to be here." She commented softly. "You are about to see the most bizarre motley crew of freaks ever to grace this earth. It could get ugly."
Deontic, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 17 – A Motley Crew of Freaks

"There will be no back-stabbing, no bickering, no gun-pointing and, above all, no with-holding information. Everyone as scared as I am? Good."
Deontic, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 17 – A Motley Crew of Freaks

"We are going to attempt democracy, Lamond."
Deontic, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 17 – A Motley Crew of Freaks

Deontic rose. "Slow down, Mello. Something is bothering me here." She loitered in front of the large white board that had been brought in at her behest. A dry-ink marker hovered over it in her hand. "Right..." She began writing her formulas. They all began reading '4 = O [A|B' She moved her pen to the line below '4 = P[C|', then back to the line above to add a 'D|'. "Will you all stop watching me until I've finished please? You are really putting me off."
Deontic, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 20 – Brainstorm

"I've worked out some conditional probabilities which might be of interest."
Deontic, Watari Pt 1: L's Heirs: Chapter 20 – Brainstorm

"Go in with the truth. At least, what I think was the truth. It wasn't just you. It was the system. It was depressingly easy to dehumanise all of us in there. We were all fighting isolationist wars. You were just better at it than most."
Deontic, The Mello Code: Chapter 23 – TYVM for 3000 Hits

"I cannot do this. I cannot go on waiting for the next flare up. I cannot live my life wondering which of us will be taken out next, because old hurts went unchecked and our upbringing forced us at each other's throats... We are not detectives in this room. We are men and women ensuring our futures by appeasing our pasts. You can each give in to that nurtured fear now and leave. You're all genius enough to find a way out. But the next time the call comes to say that another of us has gone under, then I hope that you can live with yourselves.""
