Basic Data

One of the children raised as possible heir to the L name. She was 14th in the Wammy's House rankings and wasn't actively involved in the Kira case.

After leaving Wammy's House, Lamond continued to work on cases which originated from the Watari Network. She also helped Linda with interior design for exhibits at Linda's art gallery.

Claire Kouropoulos was born, on September 26th 1990, in Serres, Macedonia, Greece, as the daughter of Ioannis and Evelina Kouropoulos. She was only eighteen months old, when her mother left the family home. Evelina stated that she never wanted to be a wife and mother, she wanted to be an actress and was going to Athens to become famous. She was never seen again.

Ioannis was a lorry driver, who endeavoured to raise his daughter alone. While she was very young, he only undertook haulage journeys that would see him return to his home at night. A neighbour childminded Claire during the day. From the age of seven, Ioannis occasionally took Claire with him, allowing him to travel further afield, thus earning a greater income. Later, Claire's cryptic comment to Mello, that she knows Yugoslavia very well, pertained to this period. She saw Slavic Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia from her father's lorry cabin.

Claire was at school, on May 16th 2001, when her father's lorry overturned in strong winds. He was killed and she was taken to a local orphanage. Her genius was soon noted and recorded. Claire was entered into an international competition for gifted and talented orphans. Soon after winning her round, a Watari representative visited to offer her a scholarship in a Wammy's Group orphanage.

Claire entered Wammy's House, in England, on January 25th, 2002, and later took the name Lamond.

Why Lamond?

Lamond never explained the origin of her pseudonym to the rest of the alumni. This was because she had to think of something on the spot, after Roger gave her five minutes to come up with a name. She thought she had chosen the French word for 'the stylish'. 'Le monde' is actually 'the world'. Roger did attempt to correct it her name to Lemond, but she argued that, as a female, she wanted 'la'. Utterly weary of arguing with children by this stage in the day, Roger allowed Lamond.

About a month later, Lamond started French lessons properly and discovered her error. She had been aiming for 'à la mode' and so tried to convince Roger to let her change her name to Lamode. He refused and she remained Lamond.

Lamond spent much of her life being told that she was intelligent. She entered Wammy's House as a confident, slightly arrogant eleven year old. She received a profound shock in being placed amongst children who consistently beat her in examinations. She initially tried much harder and did gain some ground, but the strain soon saw her sinking back to 14th place. Only Mairoo ranked lower. This dented her confidence and initiated a low level panic that was to remain for the rest of her life.

Dismissed intellectually by most of her peers, Lamond's other great asset was notable beauty. By the time she was thirteen, Lamond had quietly taken the view that, if she couldn't be the cleverest, then she would be the prettiest. She would regain the popularity that she had enjoyed, for intellectual abilities, in school and her previous orphanage, but this time it would be for aesthetic qualities.

In May 2004, Mello began a campaign of verbally attacking Lamond for 'ugliness'. She took it to heart and this period triggered her decline which ended in anorexia nervosa.

A flaw in Lamond's personality is the bigotry, which she learned from her father. One of her earliest complaints, at Wammy's House, was protesting to Roger the requirement for her to share classes with people from other races. Within the first week, she was in detention for derogatory comments made to Mairoo. She viewed her own Hellenic race as superior to any of the others, though sheer loneliness saw her allying with other caucasians.

She also made scathing comments about the Slavic race in a class. This earned her another detention. Mello was pretending to be Germanic at the time, so waited to respond. Later, Jonny commented that he thought Mello would have hit her for that. Mello asked why he should do that. Jonny replied, "Because I thought you Russians are Slavs." Mello did tackle her about it, but her response was, "I don't mean Russians. I meant the scum down in the Balkans." Mello withdrew, afraid that his Yugoslav origin would be revealed.

Her racism also caused a schism between Salvo and his friends and Lamond's group of friends. This side of her personality was only addressed by Deontic and Salvo beating her in the rankings. It became an undercurrent, though her friendship with Deontic did dissipate it in later life.

Also learned from her father was Lamond's homophobia. When Matt told Linda, in 2002, that he was gay, Lamond was initially scathing and then dismissive of it.

Lamond became an expert at evaluating survival conditions for human beings.

"So pedantic. Right! This is the battlefield. Whatever the outcome here is the result of the Christmas Day War. Anyone who continues to fight after this is breaking the truce that will last for the rest of the day. That will make them a loser. Understood?" She held out perfectly manicured long nails. "Mello, I need that ball."

Lamond leaned across to hug him. "No wonder you turned out so... hard." She ran her fingers through Mello's hair, then slipped onto his lap, seemingly oblivious to how startled he appeared. "No wonder you and Matt ended up..." People began drifting back to their seats, except for the thin woman, whose hand rested on Mello's chest. The blond blushed and everyone watched in fascination. "It must have been terrible." Three pairs of eyes followed Mello's back to Matt, but the redhead was just smirking as he watched. "Mello, have you ever had a woman this close before?"

Lamond was sitting up on the bed when Mello entered. She had been warned by Deontic and so had her make-up on. She sat with as much poise as she could muster amongst the cushions. She smiled at him. "What have us lesser mortals done to deserve a visitation from the gods?"

"Oh, Mihael and I have put the words to rights up there. Pek Wan, don't be angry." Lamond raised a frail arm towards Deontic. She rushed to hold her hand, then to raise Lamond from the chair to her feet. "I always had a weakness for cute men."
