One of the children raised as possible heir to the L name. He was last in the Wammy's House rankings and not actively involved in the Kira case.
Hashimoto Genki was born, on August 6th 1989, in Nara, in the Kansai region of Honshu, Japan. He was the only child of Hashimoto Tai and Isoko.
It was obvious, even as a baby, that Genki was a genius. His parents noted that, at four months old, he stared at the labels on his stuffed toys. He was speaking at six months and soon stringing sentences together. By the time he was eighteen months old, he was reading basic words. Tai and Isoko encouraged his progress with infant intelligence classes, recommended developemental toys and the inclusion of brain boosting foods, such as oily fish, in his diet.
At four years old, Genki was playing the koto and was already enrolled in a specialist school, noted for educating geniuses. He was notable even amongst his peers and was included in an article, in a national magazine, about clever children.
On April 23rd, 2000, when Genki was ten years old, he was at an activities camp with friends. His parents took the opportunity to visit friends near Mount Koma. En route, a motorcyclist pulled out of a sliproad without looking and the resulting collision killed Tai, Isoko and the motorcyclist.
Genki was taken to an orphanage owned by the Wammy Group. He was quickly transferred to the Wammy's House, in England, arriving there on April 29th 2000, the day after his parents' funeral. Two years later, he took the name Mairoo.
Mairoo was at Wammy's House during May 2002, when pseudonyms were being chosen. Nathalie expressed the opinion that, if she was to be known by a new name, she wanted one that was 'ordinary'. Some of those hearing her agreed and so chose names accordingly.
Nueng Mairoo was a close friend before Mairoo left Japan and was forced to cut contact with anyone from his old life. He took the name out of respect for his friend.
Quiet, shy and fairly insular, Mairoo was very much a loner. He was largely ignored by his peers at Wammy's House, as he frequently came last in the rankings and posed no other threat. In adulthood, Matt was to muse that being last was the wisest position of all in the institution, leading to private speculation that Mairoo had already discerned that.
Mairoo had a very poetic streak, enjoying the finer nuances of beauty in the world around him.
Mairoo's reserve concealed a vivid imagination. He is able to apply or decode metaphor in almost any situation. He is brilliant at noticing the subtlies of life.
