One of the children raised as possible heir to the L name. He was 2nd in the Wammy's House rankings and was instrumental in catching Kira.
Since leaving Wammy's House, Mello joined the Mafia, then later established the Mello Code as detective.
Mihael Ezra Keehl was born, in the early hours of the morning of December 13th 1989, in Gorskica, Krapina-Zagorje, Yugoslavia, as the only son of Mihael and Silvija Keehl. He was born on the eve of the Croatian War of Independence and raised in a loving, devoutly Roman Catholic home. His mother constantly engaged him in activities which stimulated his intelligence. She also instilled in him a deep sense of honour, charity and Christian behaviour.
Though the war was raging all around him, Mihael and Silvija ensured that their son, nicknamed Miho, was sheltered from it. He later recalled his mother crying and unease at a family gathering on his birthday. He deduced that this must have been his second birthday and was a reaction to the massacre of Croatian Roman Catholics at Vocin. Otherwise, the war didn't penetrate the walls of their home.
This all changed on May 3rd, 1994, when paramilitaries overwhelmed Gorskica. Though there were many cases of torture and fatality within the town, the largest number of those killed were inside the church in the Old Town. A bomb detonated, igniting explosives hidden in the crypt, and killed over 500 people worshipping inside. Mihael survived, because he had previously hidden in the confessional box, fearing the wrath of his parents over a broken rosary.
Mihael was taken to a local orphanage, where his genius was noted. An alert reached Quillsh Wammy, who flew to Croatia on July 19th, 1994. Two days later, on July 21st, 1994, Mihael entered Wammy's House, in England. He later took the name Mello.
In Croatia, the pet form of Mihael is Miho. This is the name which Mello's parents called him to differentiate him from his father. This is Mello's past. He saw his future as being L. He took the first and last letters of Miho, M+O, and inserted 'L' between them. Phonetically, L = 'el', but Melo ends up as ME-low. He added an extra 'l' to ensure that L's name was prominent within it, hence mELL-o.
In short, L inside Miho.
In 'All The Way Here', Matt says that he's worked out why Mello got his name. His theory was that it's a childish way of pronouncing Mihael. The reality is why Mello responded that Matt was half right.
Mello has layers of personality. Depending upon the situation, his mood or the person with him, he can be highly compassionate and sensitive through to cold and murderous. His personality is best described as a journey, each stage leaving its mark upon him.
As a small child, he was noted for a bright, sunny disposition, though he could be shy around strangers. Silvija and Mihael were often complimented on Miho's good manners and politeness. The massacre of Gorskica badly traumatised him and dealt a powerful blow to his faith. Roger Ruvie, an aethist himself, felt that helping Mihael come to terms with the shock within the context of his Catholicism would be more beneficial than completing the task of destroying his faith. Mello's faith remained a strong element of his personality throughout his life.
The atmosphere of Wammy's House turned Mello into a nervous, quiet, but studious child. Prone to emotional outbursts, he did have a nasty temper, when riled. His friendship with Matt helped stabilise them both. Mello's confidence was regained as he consistently ranked first in the succession to the L Code.
The arrival of Near, in 2000, dented Mello's confidence again. The younger boy immediately beat Mello in the rankings, triggering an inferiority complex which Mello was never to shake. Inwardly panicked by the quality of genius in the fourth generation, Mello became hardened and determined to succeed. His ambition and lack of self-worth manifested as bullying with the majority of the other children becoming his victims.
The profound shock of L's death saw Mello leaving Wammy's House. He ultimately joined the Mafia, where the steely edge to his character was honed. He learned how to kill and refined the use of fear as a strategic weapon. Severe injuries sustained in the hunt for Kira, followed by the successful solution of the case, led to Mello suffering a disintegration of his personality.
As he has matured, Mello has softened again. He is more likely to act compassionately now than with the violent coldness of his late teens. He has recently sought to make amends with those whom he terrorised in his youth.
Mello is a polymath genius. He is a brilliant strategician.
